WHITE MOUNTAIN LAND TRUST
Minutes of January
9, 2006 meeting
Board members present: Keith Justice, Lynn Krigbaum, Norris Dodd, Sue Sitko. Board members absent: Jim Anderson, Ginny Handorf, Richard Remmington, Dottie Baker, and Jim Roeder. Also present: Gretchen Forbeck and Steve Johnson.
Steve Johnson introduced himself as a local radio executive interested in helping the WMLT preserve open space. He has a background of 10 years of forest work.
Since a quorum was not present, Keith called the work session to order at 7:10 PM. There were no changes to note in the December minutes. The treasurer, Norris Dodd, reported $814.16 in our bank account. He also submitted a 1/2/06 letter to Barbara Butterfield regarding the questions she had raised for the 501(c)(3) application. Norris answered all her concerns and now we should receive our tax-exempt status soon. He also noted that he has sent in the paperwork for Dept. of Transportation to change the St. Mary’s church mile to the WMLT.
Sue Sitko reported on the Sonoran Institute which has a philosophy similar to the Nature Conservancy and she shared their report of economic prospects of rural areas in the West. Primarily, they found that financial services and retirement are of economic importance instead of extractive industries. They will present to the Natural Resources Working Group’s February 14th meeting. Sue also shared an addendum for the WMLT brochure which she has produced to show the various membership levels and “thank you” gifts for donating. She will talk with Black Mesa about decals, visors, and tee shirts with our logo on them. She also showed the contents of the presentation boxes which will be available from the Nature Conservancy office, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Parks and Recreation office. In addition, she shared the banner her husband designed for AZ Game and Fish Region I. It is 3’ by 8’ and supported by telescoping poles. Discussion followed concerning making one for WMLT. The cost is about $250.
Keith shared “The Red Barn” DVD which he had ordered. Steve Johnson offered to preview it and report his opinion at the February meeting. Keith also ordered 15 minute short features which he will have at the next meeting. Discussion about advertising via “trailers” at the new movie theater followed.
Norris handed out a list of considerations for town partnership and he will call Paul Esparza and make an appointment to meet with him. Keith, Norris and Richard may meet with him, too, if he wishes to get started on his committee.
Sue and Keith reported on the slow but continuing progress of the appraisal of the Allen property. They plan to meet with Jan Sell and the Allen's soon.
There was no newsletter report because Dottie was absent.
The meeting ended at 8:50 PM
